Dog Beach Fort Lauderdale: Canine Beach Rules and Hours

This is where most visitors get caught out, and it costs a wasted drive to the beach.

Dogs are not allowed on Fort Lauderdale Beach generally. Canine Beach is a specific designated stretch, and outside its posted boundaries the standard no-dogs rule applies again.

The rules the city actually enforces:

Leash required at all times, six feet maximum. This is not an off-leash beach.
Current vaccination and a license for every dog.
Owners are responsible for their pets, and aggressive dogs are not permitted.

Turtle season changes the hours. Canine Beach normally runs sunrise to sunset. From May 1 through October 31, sea turtle nesting season, it opens later at 7 a.m. instead of sunrise.

That matters more than it sounds. Those are exactly the months when a Florida beach is only comfortable early, so the window between opening and the sand getting too hot is genuinely narrow. Arrive at seven, not at ten.

The Dog Beach Fort Lauderdale Actually Has 🏖️

Searching for a dog beach in Fort Lauderdale turns up a lot of pages that imply the whole shoreline is open. It is not. There is one designated stretch, Canine Beach, and it sits on North Fort Lauderdale Beach Boulevard near the 900 block.

It is also a leashed beach, which surprises people who have been to Tampa Bay or Miami. Your dog can get in the water, but on a six-foot lead the whole time. If off-leash is what you came for, Snyder Park and its dog swim area is the better trip.

Broward County enforces this. Stepping outside the posted boundary with a dog is the single most common way visitors pick up a warning.

Timing, Heat and What to Bring 🐾

Fort Lauderdale runs hot for most of the year, and the beach schedule works against you in summer.

May through October: Canine Beach opens at 7 a.m. for turtle nesting season. Go at opening.
November through April: sunrise to sunset, and late afternoon is genuinely pleasant.

Bring fresh water and do not let the dog drink salt water, bring more waste bags than you expect to need, and carry the leash even to the off-leash parks because you need it in every parking lot. Rinse the salt off afterwards, because dried salt irritates skin and paws on the drive home.
